The long-rumored trade of Dublin’s top draft pick, left winger Alexander Ovechkin, became reality this afternoon when the Fighting Irish sent Ovie and a 2014 first round pick to Moscow in exchange for two 24-year-old U.S.-born forwards, Phil Kessel and Bobby Ryan.
The Dynamo take on Ovechkin’s five-year, $9 million salary. Kessel, a right wing, will make $5.4 million for three years, while Ryan, who can play any forward position will earn $5.1 million for four years. Both are currently signed on Type 2 contracts.
Ovechkin was the 15th player drafted in the EURO draft, while Kessel and Ryan were picked in rounds 3 and 5, respectively.
