Cooke hat trick forces Game 7 in South; Lidstrom, Malone both injured

Matt Cooke was the dominant force in Munich Saturday, as his three-goal performance severed Geneva’s hopes of advancing to the EURO League finals. At least temporarily. The Foxes and Generals will put it all on the line Monday when they meet for Game 7 of the Southern Conference finals. The Northern Conference has also come down to a game 7.

On Saturday, Geneva had two leads, but Munich stormed back to tie the game twice and then dominate for a 4-goal win. Marian Gaborik opened the scoring for General and Teemu Selanne gave them a 2-1 lead by the end of the first period. Between the goals was Cooke’s first of the game and 6th of the playoffs. In the second period, Munich tied it on a deflection goal by Torey Mitchell, and then Cooke really went to work. He scored on the powerplay with 11:44 remaining in the second period to give the Foxes their first lead and then widened the gap to two goals 3:30 later. Cooke scored 20 goals during the regular season to go along with 12 points. He played on a line with Brooke Laich (2 assists) and Josh Bailey (1 assist). Munich’s powerplay clicked twice more in the third period with Joe Thornton and Saku Koivu scoring. Not to long after Cooke gave Munich its first lead of the game, Geneva suffered an injury with veteran Ryan Malone leaving the game. He will not play on Monday. And after the game it was revealed superstar defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is also injured.
