The best team during the regular season has won the first-ever EURO Cup.Sparked by the play of 41-year-old sniper Teemu Selanne, the Geneva Generals defeated Copenhagen on Sunday to win the series in six games. They were afforded a nice ovation by the Copenhagen crowd of 18,850 who had hoped their Tridents could prolong the series one more game.
Copenhagen gave it a good try, firing 43 at Kari Lehtonen, but the General netminder kept them off the scoreboard until the third period, when his team was already up 3-0. Selanne scored twice for Geneva, getting the first goal of the game off a pretty assist from Nick Foligno, and then getting the eventual game-winner with 13:22 remaining in the third period. Foligno and Mike Fisher assisted on that goal. In between the Selanne goals, Raffi Torres scored with an assist going to David Desharnais. Torres had two assists in Geneva’s 3-1 win in Game 5 on Friday.
The Tridents started a comeback with two goals in a five-minute span, but by the time Dany Heatley made it a one-goal contest, there were only 57 seconds remaining. Six different Trident players had at least 5 shots on Lehtonen.
The Fisher-Foligno-Selanne line was plus 2 for the winners.
