Three Questions

1. Will going big in one draft pay off? General Manager Terry Moutafis started the team with a cautious approach, drafting mainly players with low salaries. Then he invested heavily in the Season 2 draft, sacrificing future picks and some roster players. He also traded to move up in the draft. Picked up during that draft were Vadim Shipachyov and brothers Steffan and Nick Kronwall (Nick through a trade). The two drafted players came with picks number 1 and 5. Before, during and after that Season 2 draft, Moutafis used trades to acquire key pieces of the team which went from 20th overall in Season 1 to 6th in Season 3. Goalie Cam Ward is arguably the most important piece to come out of the trades.

2. How about this Greek kid, eh? When Milan drafted Dimitrios Kalyvas in the second round of the Season 2 draft, he became the first native Greek in the EURO League and just about everyone knew Moutafis would try hard to get him onto the team. He succeeded as Season 3 began and coach John Tortorella gave Kalyvas a chance to show what he could do. He did really well. Extremely well. In an average of 14 minutes of ice time per game, the then 30-year-old, scored 25 goals and 70 points while working toward a plus 25 rating. He wasn’t great defensively, but he didn’t miss a game and in the comfort of his home nation, he emerged as one of the more vocal leaders of the Greeks. And in the playoffs, Kalyvas was amazing, putting up a plus 11 rating and scoring 17 points in 19 games. Scott Hartnell remains at the top of the depth chart at left wing and will probably team with David Backes and recently resigned Jason Pominville on the top line, with Kalyvas skating with Ryan O’Reilly and T.J. Oshie to give the Greeks two dangerous lines again.

3. Umm, defensemen, Mr. Moutafis? Moutafis hasn’t kept the shelves full of defensemen and Lubomir Visnovsky retired in the off season. That leaves Theo Peckham, who played 15 games last year, penciled in as the sixth defenseman to be paired with Tim Gleason. But pencils have erasers and the Greeks have enough cap space to sign a free agent for that spot. Dustin Byfuglien is firmly planted on the top pairing, probably with Ian White, and the Brothers Kronwall will be on patrol as the second pairing. Even if Moutafis lures one of the best free agent defensemen available – Dan Boyle and Joni Pitkanen – those top two pairings won’t change.
