Patrick Kane, Claude Giroux and Dustin Byfuglien were crowned as Skills champions Saturday in three very close competitions.
Kane of Minsk edged out a group of four other skaters to win the Fastest Skater title. The next four spots were divided by hundredths of a second, with Jeff Skinner of London placing second ahead of Claude Giroux (Edinburgh), Tyler Kennedy (Oslo) and Steven Stamkos (Lisbon). Hometown favorite Brad Marchand, who placed third in Season 4, was 7th.
Giroux then bettered his third-place finish in the Fastest Skater event and took the Accuracy Shooting award home to Scotland. He denied two-time winner Erik Karlsson of Madrid another win by just two tenths of a second. The league’s new fastest skater, Patrick Kane, placed third in the accuracy event just ahead of Belfast’s Sidney Crosby.
As expected in the Hardest Shot competition, the competition came down to cannon blasts from four men: Dustin Byfuglien, Shea Weber, Tyler Myers and Ilya Kovalchuk. Byfuglien of Athens took the title, but just barely, to deny Weber his fourth-straight win. Myers placed third.
