Three Questions

1. With Daniel Sedin replacing Hossa, will we see more scoring? Probably. Sedin came in as a free agent as Hossa went out as a free agent, and the Swede is better with the puck than the Slovak is. But Hossa played a determined defensive game that will be missed. The Eagles and Coach Brent Sutter now have a top line of Jonathan Toews centering Sedin and Tyler Ennis. They could be a force, but for that to happen, the fragile Sedin will have to stay healthy and Ennis will have to return to his Season 4 form when he scored 37 goals and 87 points. Toews, now 28, has been the best player in Bratislava since he was drafted in the first round of the initial draft, and on three separate occasions he came within a handful of points of hitting the 100-point plateau. Barring injuries to himself and his linemates, the captain should hit it this season.

2. Any big losses for the team  in the off season? On the surface, the loss of Lauri Korpikoski to free agency doesn’t seem big. He only played 107 games in a Bratislava uniform and he certainly didn’t light it up (55 points), but from the time he arrived as a waiver pickup from Edinburgh in Season 4, he had instant chemistry with center Milan Gulas and right wing Andreas Jamtin. Sutter thought the trio gave them a good third line option and all three players saw their plus-minus ratings go up significantly once they formed a line. Gulas is underrated and playing center in Bratislava, where he’ll never get past Toews on the depth chart. But Sutter plans to give Gulas a good look sometime on the second line this season with the Chinese Lucic (Wei Yang Zhang) and Troy Brouwer.

3. Overall, how will they be? The Eagles have been in the playoffs every year and owner Yurchik Dluhy thinks they should be there again this season. Overall, the team should drop in the standings. As mentioned, there is fear the loss of Korpikoski will hurt. Frans Nielsen was let go after his cheap contract expired and promoted Zemgus Girgensons will be a downgrade this season. Winger Luke Adam left in a trade for defenseman Karl Alzner, who takes Christian Ehrhoff’s place in the lineup, but veteran Erik Cole was signed recently to fill Adam’s spot. General Manager Chuck Massaro likes Cole’s experience and leadership qualities even if the 38-year-old doesn’t move like he used to. If Cole stays healthy and contributes, Bratislava makes it to the playoffs again.
