Season 8 Draft Project: Names coming in

Generals managers have started submitting names for the Season 8 draft project (which would only be adopted if it’s approved in a league-wide vote) and a good list is starting to shape up. Here’s a look at what Commissioner Chuck Massaro did with the names so far:

  1. So far, 15 GMs have submitted four names each.
  2. The names of players who have already been members of EURO League teams were removed (Miikka Kiprusoff, Teemu Selanne, Ryan Smyth and Mike Commodore)
  3. The commissioner started ranking the players according to the previously suggested PO guide chart ( Click here for previous story) and it seemed to him that we had too many Hall of Fame quality players. Anticipating that problem, a suggestion had been made early in the process for GMs to forward a really good player, a good player and an OK player. Because two GMs submitted 4 NHL Hall of Famers each, the commissioner decided to remove the third and fourth names on their lists (Gordie Howe, Darryl Sittler, Larry Robinson and Guy Lafleur) to water down the talent pool. Then, names were attached to the existing PO ratings to form the list.
  4. On the tentative list, there are some holes left to fill, mainly in the second and third rounds. Those spots are the ones with red type (below) and players off WSH add-on rosters are currently there as place-holders. The commissioner would also like to add a few to the bottom of the list to give the GMs picking at the end of the draft more of a choice. I just think a GM might want not want Harry Dick on his roster if he has a choice. The commissioner will ask the 9 GMs who haven’t responded yet to submit names to overwrite the red names. There is a chance their submissions might knock a few already-there players down a PO point. Gothenburg will also be asked to submit one name because two of his previous suggestions (Selanne and Kiprusoff) were removed.

Below is the working draft list. What do you think?

For the Seasons column, I took the total games played and divided that by 82. That number will affect the DU rating. The stats represent the players’ average season results. Six goalies’ approximate goals against and save percentages are listed over 62-game seasons.

Please remember that we are starting with a PO rating first and adding a name to it, so it won’t be perfect. For example, Ray Bourque, Phil Esposito and a few others probably deserve better PO ratings, but there are only going to be so many POs to choose from.

We have plenty of time to make adjustments to the list. With quick polls, we can swap players’ spots on the list if the majority agrees. Expect to see lots of little polls in the next few weeks.

Bear in mind that the stats above don’t reflect players’ defensive abilities, hockey sense, leadership, hustle, etc., so just because a player has more points than someone above him on the list that doesn’t necessarily mean they should be swapped.

If you want to change one of your already-submitted players to someone else, you can, but please aim for the red slots. For example, I suggested Dennis Maruk, but his stats are much better than I thought they were. I might remove him and add Lou Angotti to a red 76 PO slot, thereby opening up an 81 PO slot.
