The voting is complete and the site and teams have been announced for the Season 6 EURO All-Star Game, to be played on May 8.
Stockholm, Sweden, and General Manager Michael Sauer will host the game this year with former Stockholm fan favorite Shane Doan serving as one of the honorary coaches of the game. Doan, who was drafted by Stockholm in Season 1 and played three seasons there before finishing his career with a season in Bern, will coach the Northern Conference. Hall of Famer Zdeno Chara, who played all four of his EURO seasons in Bratislava, will coach the Southern Conference.
The host city will also have three current players representing it in the game. Goalie Braden Holtby, forward Brendan Gallagher and rookie defenseman John Klingberg were all voted onto the Northern Conference team this season. Klingberg will be paired with St. Petersburg’s Erik Johnson behind the top defense pairing of Jack Johnson (Helsinki) and Ryan Suter (Moscow). Gallagher will be a fourth-liner on the star-studden North team, playing along side Belfast’s Nazem Kadri and Evander Kane. Holtby finished third in goalie voting behind Minsk’s Carey Price and Moscow’s Alexander Salak.
Over on the Southern Conference roster, Berlin Smurf forwards Ryan Callahan and Loui Eriksson will have to stow their rivalry with Evgeny “Damn” Malkin for a day because all three were voted onto the top forward line. Munich goalie Cory Schneider and Madrid’s Robin Lehner rather surprisingly garnered more votes than did Geneva’s Frederik Andersen, who led the league in save percentage for much of the voting period.
The final vote tally is shown below. Players highlighted in blue were voted onto the team and those highlighted in light gold were named to the team by Commissioner Chuck Massaro, either to get a team represented or, in the case of Patrik Berglund and Nikita Zadorov, to even out the number of players on the teams.
