Madrid, Athens win Game 7’s

Madrid defeats Bratislava in 7 games – It looked for a while that Tyler Toffoli of Bratislava had a Midas touch that was going to send Madrid to the golf course, but the Royals stormed back with three goals in 3:32 after Toffoli put the Eagles in front halfway through the third period. Madrid wound up with a 6-4 victory. Madrid’s Shea Weber, who played despite an injury, scored the first goal of the game and had two assists. Toffoli was one of Bratislava’s most dangerous players in the series. He scored 5 goals and 5 assists, with 4 of his goals coming in the final three games. The Royals will play Berlin in the second round.

Athens defeats Munich in 7 games – Staffan Kronwall’s slapshot eluded goalie supreme Cory Schneider late in the game to give Athens a 2-1 lead. They added an empty-net goal with 59 seconds remaining. Early in the game, Craig Smith of Munich scored his second goal of the playoffs and the home fans were rocking. But after a scoreless second period that Munich dominated, Bobby Butler tied it up for Athens with a wrist shot 9 minutes into the third period. Athens goalie Jaroslav Halak faced 29 Munich shots and only allowed the goal by Smith. The Greeks will start the second round of the playoffs on Tuesday against the Rouge Eiffels in Paris.
