Quick, Malkin lead free agent frenzy list

Superstar goalie Jonathan Quick leads a dandy cast of free agents that will be available to EURO general managers early next week when “free agent frenzy” occurs. Most of the bigger names are coming from the Southern Conference.

Quick is a bonafide superstar in the league (94 OV) with three individual regular season trophies under his belt, including the Best Goalie Award in Season 2 when he was with Munich. More importantly, Quick has twice won EURO Cups and twice won Playoff MVP Awards. Whatever happens with him next week, he will always have a place in Giants’ fans heart.

There are three other goalies on the free agent shelf with real value. Kari Lehtonen of Edinburgh, who is another winner of a Cup and a Playoff MVP trophy, as well as Jimmy Howard of Berlin and Ondrej Pavelec of Geneva are all looking for new contracts.

And that “Le Gasp!!” you heard a few minutes ago, came from Paris, where Evgeny Malkin announced he is now available to the highest bidder because he and Rouge Eiffels GM Ralph Booth could not come to an agreement on a new contract.  Malkin scored 49 goals and was second in the league in scoring this past season, so look for him to be rolling in dough soon.

Maybe Malkin will go to arch-rival Berlin. They have a prime lineup spot open at the moment because Patric Hornquist didn’t re-sign with the Smurfs. Either did Nicklas Hjalmarsson or the aforementioned Howard.

Other 80 OV or higher free agents available include defensemen Brent Seabrook of Milan and Dustin Byfuglien of Lisbon; wingers Josef Vasicek of Paris and T.J. Oshie of Athens; and center Tyler Bozak of London.

Teams looking for leadership have Malkin and Patrick Marleau of Munich as their top targets, with Jay Bouwmeester of Geneva and  Joe Thornton of Bern also taking offers.

The league will move past the current Type 2 step on Sunday, with the end of the last free agent step planned for Tuesday afternoon. Please check the box when you are ready to advance.
