Kessel, Byfuglien and Karlsson win Skills titles

Phil Kessel’s blazing speed kept defensemen from a sweep of the three events in the EURO League Skills Competition on Saturday.

The Dublin forward edged out Prague defenseman Torey Krug for first place in the star-studded Fastest Skater competition. The times put in by the top 7 skaters were very close. St. Petersburg’s Jonathan Huberdeau was third. Crowd favorite John Tavares of Lisbon placed 10th and that was his best result of the day as the only player to compete in all three events.

In the hardest shot contest, big Dustin Byfuglien of the Geneva Generals used his massive frame to win the title for the third time in seven tries. He ties Shea Weber for the most Hardest Shot championships. Like Weber, Byfuglien has won it with three different teams. He was a Milan Guerriero when he took the title in Season 1 and an Athens Greek when he won in Season 5. Weber, of Madrid, finished second this season, and last year’s champ, Tyler Myers of Bratislava, placed third.

For the second straight time, and for the fourth time in seven years, Madrid’s Erik Karlsson has taken the title in the Accurate Shot contest, edging out Tyler Ennis of Bratislava and rookie Connor McDavid of Oslo. Karlsson has been amazing in this event. In addition to his four victories, he finished second to Claude Giroux in Season 5 and he placed third in Season 1. The only time he failed to place in the top three was in Season 3.

Here are the results. The player’s attributes account for the number in the Ratings column, a random number is in the next column to reflect effort and luck, and the total is the average of the two.
