Bratislava maintains lead in South

Bratislava 4, Prague 1 – There was just one game in the EURO League Friday and it featured teams from the former Czechoslovakia. Bratislava created some separation between themselves and Madrid and Paris at the very top of the Southern Conference standings. The Eagles can clinch first place if they can win one and at least reach overtime in another of their last three games.

On Friday, Marc-Andre Fleury continued his fine play in net for Bratislava, making 22 saves and allowing just one Prague goal, that scored by Matt Nieto to make it 3-1 in the third period. Marcel Hossa, who played for Prague for five seasons before joining Bratislava this season, assisted on the first two goals of the game. Bratislava did extremely well on faceoffs, winning 51 and losing just 26.

Saturday’s games

Paris and Madrid are both in action Saturday, trying to close in on Bratislava. But both are on the road: Paris in Zurich and Madrid in Lisbon, who are playing with Yannik Weber replacing injured Jared Spurgeon.

Elsewhere, Dublin, which is holding on to the last playoff spot in the North will try to do something they haven’t been able to do in three tries this season: beat Stockholm. And in Athens, Gods right winger Loui Eriksson will be trying to get a little closer to the 50-goal mark. He leads the league with 48 goals and he has four games left on the schedule. If Eriksson hits 50, he will become the third player to do so in the last four seasons. Steven Stamkos of Lisbon scored 59 times in Season 5 and Nicklas Backstrom of Minsk scored 51 last season.
